Not surprisingly, most of the kids I know think of running as a punishment. However, that is how it is reflected in our society. If you’re late to practice, the coach makes you run a lap.Make a bad play in a game, go run a few laps. It’s the well-known penalty. Why, then, do others take sheer joy in it?Well, it all goes back to the cheesy, but very true saying:“Pain is temporary, pride is forever”.Though we may feel the pain and worry of upcoming races, we’ve grown accustomed to it.
Just the other day, I ran a five-mile course, with a few hills.I’d have to say it was quite an interesting run.My legs went numb from a blistering cold wind that pummeled me the whole way, I got chased by a ferocious dog who apparently thought it was snack time, I slipped on a patch of ice and almost slid down a long hill, and not to mention I got so many rocks stuck in my shoe, my Achilles tendon got scratched up and I had to pull over to empty out my Asics.Even though the run wasn’t one of my best, I still look upon it with respect. The obstacles may seem annoying and painful, but they teach us a lesson:It’s hard to overcome troubles and get stronger if you don’t try.
Running may seem like a punishment, but that’s what I think makes it such a wonderful sport.I can say that I love running, and others can gawk all they want. It’s dignity and determination that keeps me striving for goals that may seem impossible for others. It’s running that keeps me sane in the first place.I’d encourage anyone to get into the sport, but I don’t push. It’s something you have to actually want to do.It’s a pain you have to be willing to endure.
